FAQs on Laboratory Services:

Why Might I Need Lab Work Done?

Laboratory testing is done to determine a variety of things about your health, sometimes for diagnostic purposes and sometimes to monitor your treatment. Some of the most common reasons your doctor may ask for a blood sample are:

  • Diagnosing conditions such as diabetes, anemia, cancer, or HIV.
  • Monitoring your white blood cell count if you are living with blood cancer, HIV/AIDS, and/or other immune disorders.
  • Evaluating how well your heart, kidney, liver, and other organs are working.
  • Determining your risk factor for heart disease.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of any medication you might be taking.

One of the most common blood tests you may receive is a complete blood count (CBC), which involves counting each type of blood cell in your sample to see how well your body is producing them. This type of test is part of many patients’ routine checkups.

How Should I Prepare For A Lab Test?

Your preparation for a test will depend on the specific test in question. For example, depending on the reason for the test, your doctor may request fasting for blood work. This fast may or may not include taking your current medication, so be sure to remember your doctor’s instructions as you prepare for your test.
