Premier Medical Associates Adds Behavioral Health Specialty

Dr. Peter Hauber joins PMA team to respond to community need

PITTSBURGH, PA, April 16, 2012 – Premier Medical Associates, the largest multi-specialty practice in the Greater Pittsburgh area, has added a new Behavioral Health specialty and announced that Dr. Peter Hauber has joined PMA to practice psychiatry.  Committed to providing the highest quality care at the lowest cost, Premier Medical Associates touches the lives of more than 85,000 patients in the east end of Pittsburgh.

“Our doctors measure success by the overall health and quality of life our patients have, and saw a profound need for behavioral health services in the communities we serve,” explained Mark DeRubeis, CEO of Premier Medical Associates. “We are thrilled to have Dr. Peter Hauber join our team.  His work will help bridge the challenges that many patients face balancing behavioral health issues that impact their overall care.” The practice will also be hiring therapists to assist in the new Behavioral Health department.

Dr. Peter Hauber gained his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine, and has worked in community mental health for over 18 years. Dr. Hauber specializes in geriatric psychiatry, has experience in adolescence psychiatry, and covers a broad range of mental health concerns including mood disorders, depression and attention deficit disorder.

“Challenges like chronic pain, anxiety and depression can have an enormous impact on the ability of an individual to get or stay healthy,” said Dr. Hauber.  “I was attracted to the model of care Premier offers and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join their team.  Our goal is to offer a critical connection that will help people deal with mental health challenges that can impact their primary care and overall well being.”

Premier Medical Associates is one of only three physician practices in Western Pennsylvania selected to participate in a national program called Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH).  Designed to help transform our healthcare system, PCMH creates a system where every patient has one provider who handles every aspect of their care.  PCMH changes incentives and rewards physicians for keeping their patients healthy, not for the number of services provided.”

“In our leadership role as a pilot for Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH), our team recognizes that no matter what age or health you are in, it is critical to have a doctor who has a deep understanding of your health history and the responsibility to guide you to prevent illness rather than deal with it in crisis,” said Dr. James Costlow, who also serves as Director of Accountable Care at Premier. “Behavioral health impacts the outcomes of any chronic disease.”

With a focus on building better care, Premier Medical Associates is the largest multi-specialty practice in the Greater Pittsburgh area. In a healthcare environment of constant change, the physicians at Premier Medical Associates are committed to preventative care and creating value for every dollar a patient spends on healthcare.  Premier’s goal is to build a close, long term relationship between patient and physician that will reduce unnecessary hospital admissions and lead to healthier lives.

Formed in 1993, Premier Medical Associates has a team of more than sixty physicians in ten convenient locations offering specialties that include: asthma/allergy/immunology, behavioral health, cardiology, family medicine, gastroenterology, general and breast surgery, hospitalists, internal medicine, neurology, pediatrics, podiatry, psychiatry, radiology and sleep medicine.  For more information about Premier’s philosophy of healthcare, team of physicians and locations, please go to or call 412-457-0060.
